THE SIMPLE TRUTH IS, THERE’s NO SINGLE BEST MOVER – ONLY THE BEST ONE FOR YOUR SCENARIO.
A motorised caravan mover — or electric jockey wheel — does one beautifully simple thing: it manoeuvres and parks your van, boat or trailer without a tow vehicle in sight. Narrow driveway with a sharp turn? Tight swing room at your favourite caravan park? Or just tired of the push-and-shove? A good mover solves all of it.
The hard part isn’t deciding whether to buy a mover, it’s deciding which one. There’s numerous options with wildly different price tags and almost every company claiming to be “the best.”
Here’s the more useful truth: there is no single motorised mover on the market that’s best for every scenario. This guide walks you through the three things to assess about your situation, the three price/capability tiers of movers available in Australia and the feature trade-offs that quietly make or break the experience.
BUILD YOUR ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
STEP 1: WHAT ARE YOU MOVING?
BEFORE COMPARING BRANDS, GET SPECIFIC ON WHAT YOU NEED TO MOVE
Trailer Weight
Your caravan or trailer’s mass and load at the time of manoeuvring.
Trailer Tyres & Axle – Single or Double
Double-axle trailers and off-road tyres need a mover with enough torque to overcome the scrubbing effect of two sets of tyres turning together. Many entry-level units genuinely cannot do this, no matter what the listing says.
Space & Size – Drawbar or Undercarriage
A motorised mover needs to be attached somewhere. Jockey wheel models are attached to your drawbar to maximise power and force. Ensure you find a mover that has attachments compatible to your drawbar shape (A-frame, straight and angled drawbars all behave differently) or consider the trade-off’s to undercarriage movers placed under your trailer to directly engage your tyres (more info on that below).
STEP 2: WHERE WILL YOU BE MOVING?
THE WHERE MATTERS AS MUCH AS THE WHAT
Surface
Most motorised movers have a hard ceiling on slope (often around 6°, roughly 10%). Combine an incline with weight above 3T and the gap between brands becomes very real.
Incline
Smooth concrete, pavers, asphalt, gravel, lawn, dirt – the variety across and within these surfaces is almost endless and has a big say in performance.
Turning Space
Reversing into a tight shed, threading between a fence and a tree, or pivoting on the spot all demand more control than running in a straight line.
Precision & Visibility
When you’re 30 cm from a wall or boat hull, can you see where the wheels are? Remote-controlled movers let you walk alongside the van, which transforms how confident you feel.
STEP 3: YOUR OWN PREFERENCES?
BE HONEST ABOUT WHAT YOU VALUE
Budget
Not just the upfront sticker price, but add-on’s required, installation, ongoing parts and battery replacement.
Convenience and ease of use
Motorised movers exist to make parking trailers easy, but different models are easier than others to install, use and store. And not every mover makes parking a one person job (which at Optitec we believe is a minimum expectation!)
Build quality & longevity
Australian conditions are punishing. Heat, dust, salt and UV will find every shortcut a manufacturer has taken.
After Sales Service
Warranty length is one signal, but local parts availability and someone to call if something goes wrong is what really matters in year five.
UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS
With your scenario in mind, you’re ready to understand your options amongst different tiers and brands of motorised movers avaialble in Australia. Here’s how the market sorts out in 2026.
Tier 1: Entry
Under $1500
Affordable but limited to simple scenarios and expect less longevity
Manually operated electric trolleys that assist you in pushing your caravan or trailer by hand.
Usually available through online marketplaces, these models offer an attractive price and tick the box when it comes to simple scenarios – a light single-axle box trailer or camper on flat concrete.
The most common downsides of these models is that they are rarely capable of double axle, have limited longevity and provide a less convenient experience as there is no remote control, so you’re walking behind a moving load with reduced visibility and precision. Warranty and parts support can also be limited or difficult to access.
At Optitec, we don’t offer an option in this entry tier as it’s not quite aligned to our values of longevity – buy well to buy once in our book. Having said that, this entry tier is still a good decision if you do have a very simple scenario and don’t mind being ‘hands on’ in the manoeuvring process.
Tier 2: ADVANCED
$2000 – $3500
Best value for money with strong capability and convenient set up.
This is the sweet spot for most caravan and boat owners. You should expect best value for money at this investment level – serious and reliable capability to move the larger single or double axle trailers, an easy to operate machine that makes parking a one person job and quality after sales service.
Movers in this tier do have limitations though; usually not suitable for moving above 3.5T, moving above 3T on inclines and commonly need assistance on softer terrain. These are often the trigger points to the step up to more specialist capability on offer in Tier 3.
For those where Tier 2 is the right solution, next comes the challenge of discerning the difference between the two to three brands worth considering. Our honest view is that within this field most brands offer similar performance in traction and power. Where key differences are more prominent is in the ease of operations and reliability over time.
At Optitec, we stand behind our Optimover V3 as the leader amongst advanced/best value motorised movers. Being fully remote control operated – with no cords, wires or handles – it is a breeze to use. Under the hood, no other mover matches the machine steel gearing that makes Optimover a more powerful yet compact device that stands the test of time. The solid rubber tyre facilitates the tightest of turns and never needs replacing, even by customers that have been using their Optimover for 15+ years. Optitec also has the widest range of clamp attachments ensuring it is compatible with almost every type of trailer – including gooseneck or angled drawbars.
Tier 3: Specialist
$4,000–$7,000
Tailored capability for complex scenarios, but comes with higher investment
Entering Tier 3 normally means you have a more challenging or complex scenario; larger weights, inclines or the need to be confident on any terrain, including soft surfaces. Exactly which scenario you are targeting may influence your choice between heavy-duty drawbar attached models or alternatively the undercarriage systems that drive the trailer’s own wheels. Let’s take a little deep-dive;
- Heavy Duty Drawbar-attached. These follow a similar operation to motorised jockey wheels in Tier 2, but the more specialised units in Tier 3 are larger, heavier and feature track or tank like tyres to tackle complex scenarios and softer terrain. With these options you ramp up capability whilst maintaining the convenience of a drawbar solution (that can be used across multiple trailers and doesn’t impact under-trailer clearance).
These movers have the grunt to push large 4T vans up moderate and even grassy slopes but cap out at 10% gradients as they’re typically not connected to your trailer’s braking system. If you have a non-standard drawbar there are some tow-ball mounting options but this will restrict the mover’s capability on inclines so you will need to obtain advice specific to your scenario. - Undermount systems. These are motors that are installed permanently under the trailer and drive the road wheels directly. This system can be advantageous in scenarios involving low tow ball weight (common with European vans or when trying to pull trailers up inclines), steeper inclines (up to 20% with light vans) and various terrain (although watch out for potential drag from your standard jockey wheel!). The downside is they live with the van full-time, add 25–40 kg of permanent weight, can interfere with ground clearance, can’t be transferred to another trailer and can be costly to install on an already expensive purchase price.
At Optitec, we introduced the All Terrain Mover in 2025 as a dedicated solution for the more challenging scenarios. With heavy-duty tracks for grass, compact gravel and dirt and multiple motors for the heavier loads, it presents as an extremely versatile, well built caravan mover with one of the sharpest price points you’ll find amongst the more specialised movers in Tier 3.
SO WHICH MOVER IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Circling back, before you start navigating and researching the caravan mover options available, get clear about your scenario, needs and priorities. At a minimum, this should help narrow down to the tier of movers most suitable for you.
At Optitec, our starting point for decision making is quite simple;
If your scenario is a firm surface, single- or double-axle van up to 3.5T — a quality mover like the Optimover V3 is almost always the right call. Its simple and easy to use design underscored by quality parts and proven longevity make it the market leader.
If your scenario involves grass, compact gravel, real inclines, or a van pushing 4T+ — step up to more specialist capability to tackle any surface like the All Terrain Mover 4500.
Of course this might be simplifying it too far! Buying a caravan mover is an investment that you want to get right. If you’re not sure how your needs and priorities line up to the different mover models — that’s exactly the conversation Optitec exists to have. We’ve been designing, building and supporting motorised movers for Australian conditions since 2008, and we’d much rather help you choose the right mover the first time than sell you the wrong one.
